TWAREN is a hybrid network. Its 100 Gbps backbone serves as the production and research networks, and its multiple optical segments are used for specific research needs such as lambda testing.
TWAREN has five core nodes and 12 regional network centers (a.k.a. GigaPOPs.) Its five core nodes are connected with a 100 Gbps backbone which are provided by two fixed network carriers, Chunghwa Telecom and Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom. Its 12 GigaPOPs are connected to its backbone with dual uplinks and 100G bandwidth to bring Taiwan’s universities and research institutions onto it. Other networked institutions connect to TWAREN’s backbone at their nearby GigaPOPs.
Core Nodes
TWAREN’s five core nodes are strategically placed from southern to northern Taiwan, thus, covering the entire island. Together, the 5 core nodes form TWAREN’s primary optical switching backbone. They are located respectively as below:
TWAREN’s 12 GigaPOPs are mostly located at national universities as listing below. They are responsible for the network management within their regions.
(including academic institutions, research centers, and local government network centers)
These institutions are responsible for making their own connections to their nearby GigaPOPs. GigaPOPs will reserve connection points for those institutions that aren't able to connect to them for now but anticipate doing so in the near future.
TWAREN currently has a 30 Gbps international links to Los Angeles,Chicago, New York, and Singapore, and peers with other international research and education networks via these four exchange centers.
TWAREN’s Network Operation Center plays an important role in its networking maintenance. The NOC is situated at Southern Business Unit, NCHC and provides a 24/7/365 non-stopping monitoring/maintenamce service for broadband connection, co-location, proxy, SourceForge and project-based services.
Major works:
To provide a 24/7/365 non-stopping monitoring service for TWAREN’s
operation
To enhance TWAREN’s security ability
To collaborate with the TWAREN’s GigaPOPs
To maintain and to update the NOC website
NOC facilities:
Industry-standard security systems, power systems, and fire/smoke
detectors.
Telecom Management Network- (TMN) based Operation Support System
NOC services:
24/7/365 network monitoring
Network services monitoring on services including customized testing
platform, co-location service, Synchronous Remote Data Service, and
system security support and cooperation.
